You can’t guard the Kansas City Chiefs offense

Kelvin Benjamin addressed reporters for the first time since arriving with the Chiefs and it’s clear he’s happy to be out of Buffalo.

The Kansas City Chiefs officially welcomed free agent wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin to the team on Friday, and the newest addition met with reporters to answer questions.

Like many press conferences, it was difficult to get much substance beyond the typical player-speak that athletes are taught to give. Consequently, Benjamin didn’t give any meaningful insights from his perspective regarding what went wrong in Buffalo. Then again, it’s best that he avoids creating any drama at this stage in his career.

Benjamin was released by the Bills just 12 games into his tenure, a sign of just how much the relationship had soured. The Bills paid third and seventh-round draft picks for Benjamin’s services and they lack any real long-term talent at the position beyond Zay Jones, yet they cut Benjamin largely due to his lack of on-field production and temperament.

After his release, he went through waivers unclaimed since no team wanted to take on his contract, but as a free agent, he earned immediate interest at least from the Chiefs.

Benjamin stated that he’s unlikely to play against the Ravens on Sunday but the team’s vision is for him to be ready for the Chargers on Thursday Night Football next week. When asked about his immediate focus, Benjamin said:

“Right now we’re just trying to get into the playbook right now, just getting my feet wet. Right now I probably won’t be playing this game. Just trying to get here, get my feet wet and catch up with the guys. Let’s get settled.”

While he’s new, Benjamin knows enough about the offense to know, “It’s super-dynamic, man. Anybody can score. You can’t guard ’em. It’s un-guardable.” It was clear from his expression and body language that he’s pretty excited to work with Patrick Mahomes and this offense.

Benjamin, a former first round talent in the 2014 NFL Draft, had 23 catches for 354 yards and 1 touchdown this season with the Bills.
