The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t a national brand, but maybe that narrative is changing. Three members of Chiefs Kingdom made the top 50 in player sales.
Buying an NFL jersey is a big decision. Some people buy a new one every year and don that jersey for every single game. Others (like myself) buys a new one once every few years and only wears them on certain occasions.
While jerseys are a big part of player sales, there’s a lot of other apparel that goes along with it. On that note, the NFL released the top sold player sales in the NFL and three Kansas City Chiefs made the list.
One of the biggest knocks on the Chiefs throughout time has been that they don’t have any stars on their team. For the previous five years, Alex Smith was the quarterback and not only did he have the most common last name in America, but he wasn’t an exciting player (this coming from someone who liked Alex Smith a lot).
The quarterback is where the publicity starts for an NFL team and the Chiefs have a rising star on their squad. It’s no surprise that when the NFL jersey sales were released on Thursday, that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was one of three Chiefs in the top 50 in player sales.
Per NFLPA (link provided above),
Female fans are ahead of the curve on the Mahomes II train, as the rising Kansas City Chiefs quarterback topped sales of all women’s collegiate fashion tops from G-III Apparel Group.
Mahomes surprisingly wasn’t the highest ranked Chief on this list. That honor went to tight end Travis Kelce, who really has been the only star for the Chiefs over the past few years. Kelce came in at number 38 when it comes to players sales. It’s not shocking that Kelce made the list considering he’s a good player and an entertaining guy.
Mahomes wasn’t far behind Kelce on this list, coming in at 42nd in product purchases. The Chiefs new quarterback has been one of the most fun players to watch through six games this season, tossing 18 touchdowns to four interceptions and showing that he can air the pigskin out like nobody’s business.
The last Chief to make the cut when it comes to most sales in the NFL was running back Kareem Hunt, who was 45th. Hunt had an electric rookie season in 2017 and is looking to follow that up in his sophomore season in the pros.
Here was the top ten when it came to most popular players through sales:
- Tom Brady
- Dak Prescott
- Carson Wentz
- Ezekiel Elliott
- Aaron Rodgers
- Saquon Barkley
- Jimmy Garoppolo
- Nick Foles
- Antonio Brown
- Odell Beckham
Six of the ten players listed there are quarterbacks and all ten are offensive players. The highest ranked defensive player was Von Miller, who was 14th in sales. Jalen Ramsey and Khalil Mack were the next highest at 23 and 24 respectively.
These sales were apparently from between March 1, 2018 – August 31, 2018, which if so, is a bit surprising that Mahomes is that high up (unless Chiefs fans went nuts with buying his apparel). Mahomes didn’t start this hot streak this year until a few weeks after that cutoff date, but perhaps his preseason performances got non-Chiefs fans wanted to get ahead of the crowd before the season began.
I own two current Chiefs’ jerseys and that’s Kelce (a white jersey) and Justin Houston (a red jersey). The Houston one was a birthday gift back in the 2013 season when Houston was at the top of his game. I purchased the Kelce one last year after deciding I needed a new jersey since Houston was injured all the time.
At some point I’ll be getting a Mahomes jersey, but probably not for another year or two. I do have a Patrick Mahomes shirt jersey so I figure that will suffice until the time comes for me to get another jersey.
Are you surprised to see three Chiefs in the top 50 or did you think there’d be more?
