NFL Network host: Chargers offensive weapons trump Chiefs

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell can take a bow. In July, the wrote that the Chiefs have the best offensive arsenal in the NFL, and it’s hard to argue that’s not the case right now.

Those rankings were based solely on the skill-position players, excluding the quarterback. With Tyreek Hill, Kareem Hunt, Travis Kelce and Sammy Watkins, the Chiefs are averaging an NFL-best 7.1 yards per game and 36.3 points a game this season.

But Peter Schrager and Nate Burleson of “Good Morning Football” on the NFL Network on Thursday debated the best supporting casts for a quarterback in the NFL, and the Chiefs weren’t the pick.

In fact, Burleson said the Chiefs’ offensive group wasn’t even the best in their division.

“It’s the Chargers,” Burleson said. “We can go Chiefs, we can Rams, we can Patriots, that’s the obvious answer. The Chargers are more well rounded.”

This came less than a week after Rodney Harrison said the Chargers are a better team than the Chiefs.

Burleson talked up the Chargers’ running back duo of Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler. He also mentioned Keenan Allen, Tyrell Williams, Mike Williams and Travis Benjamin. It’s worth noting that Benjamin has three catches in four games this season.

The two started the discussion by asking if the Saints’ signing of receiver Dez Bryant gave quarterback Drew Brees the best supporting cast of offensive players in the NFL. Schrager thought Bryant helped put New Orleans over the top.

“The Saints offense is unstoppable, they’ve got the best record in football right now and guess what? They just got better. … I’ll take Sean Payton as a play caller over anyone in the league. I think that is the best supporting cast,” Schrager said.
