KC Chiefs guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif could miss season

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif’s injury sounds more serious than originally reported by the Chiefs.

Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said Wednesday that Duvernay-Tardif, the starting right guard, sustained a Maisonneuve injury, which involved torn ankle ligaments, as well as a fractured fibula.

Duvernay-Tardif will have surgery Monday in Green Bay, Wis.

“It’s a little bit worse than we originally thought,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.

The thought after Sunday’s victory over Jacksonville was that Duvernay-Tardif could return later in the season. Reid didn’t commit to that idea on Wednesday.

“There’s a chance,” Reid said. “I wish I could predict it.”

Burkholder said rookie safety Armani Watts sustained a core muscle injury while breaking up a pass in Sunday’s game. Watts will have surgery in Philadelphia on Thursday.

Not practicing on Wednesday will be outside linebackers Justin Houston and Tanoh Kpassagnon and safeties Eric Murray and Eric Berry. Berry hasn’t practiced since Aug. 11.

Duvernay-Tardif and Watts were placed on the injured reserve list.
