Kansas City on fire for Patrick Mahomes and his Chiefs – Boston Herald

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs Charcandrick West and Tyreek Hill visit Jeremy Taylor of Skinquest Tattoos in downtown Kansas City to update their body art, but it’s been the face of Patrick Mahomes showing up most often at the shop.

“He doesn’t have any tattoos and I don’t think he plans on getting any,” Taylor said of the quarterback.

Mahomes never has stepped foot in Skinquest, but Taylor’s been putting portraits of him on the bodies of Chiefs fans.

“Everybody wants a tattoo of the next Tom Brady,” Taylor said from the shop he has owned for six years. “Everybody’s going nuts over this kid. I guess it’s just because he’s a winner.”

The way Taylor sees it, Mahomes is ready for the enormity of Sunday’s AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium, where the game never has been played.

“Now there’s not as much pressure on him,” Taylor said. “Had he lost that Colts game a lot of people would say, ‘Yeah, but he can’t win the big one.’ He broke the curse, 50 touchdowns, 5,000 yards, nobody will be mad at him.”

Taylor said a steady stream of customers are getting Chiefs tattoo sleeves, “all in the last month, and it’s because of this kid.”

In nearby Overland Park, Kan., Dejuan Bonds of Purple Label Luxury Barbershop cuts the hair of multiple professional athletes, including Mahomes.

“I try to keep it low key for him, give him a special time to come, but it doesn’t matter,” Bonds said. “They find that guy. He’s just kind of sticking out right now. They’re respectful enough to wait for him to get done with the haircut. Then they ask for the autographs and the pictures. He doesn’t mind. He’s a good kid.”

He’s been good for business.

“Everybody wants to know: ‘What’s under the helmet? What’s under the bandana?’ We get a nice number of kids coming in asking for the haircut,” Bonds said. “Everyone wants to have something to do with this guy, and if you can’t actually touch him, you can look like him for sure. All the kids are running around getting the haircut.”

The Royals made it to the World Series in 2014 and won it in 2015, bringing euphoria to the championship-starved city.

“The Royals wasn’t like this,” Bonds said. “He is godlike around here now. It’s crazy.”

Taylor, the talented tattoo artist, agreed.

“The Royals was a tenth of what this is, and at that time, that was really big mania,” Taylor said. “Everybody was going nuts, but it’s not even close to the way they’re feeling with Mahomes.”

Kevin Kietzman of WHB/810 Radio, armed with a sharp mind and tongue to match, is the market’s signature talk-show host. In his 23 years on the air, the competing station has tried an estimated 25 different host combinations to try to mute him to no avail.
