The Kansas City Chiefs’ defense really could have used safety Eric Berry in Monday night’s loss to the Rams. In fact, they could have used him in all 11 of their games so far.
This might seem like a no-brainer, but the Kansas City Chiefs have REALLY missed Eric Berry‘s services in 2018. The secondary, despite some improvements since the first few weeks, has struggled for the most part. One would have to think that Berry helps in that department.
Berry has not played in a game for the Chiefs since the season opener of 2017 against the Patriots when he went down with an Achilles injury late in the game. This was months after Berry was signed to a wealthy contract after having an incredible 2016 season.
Well, that contract has looked to be a big time mistake so far, as Berry has barely played since having signed it. It’s been a weird situation this year with Berry, as he hasn’t played, but nearly every week, he’s been listed as “Doubtful” rather than “Out”.
There has been some buzz recently, however, that Berry could be making his return after the Chiefs bye week, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. La Canfora notes a December return is possible for the former Chiefs first round pick and Andy Reid told The Kansas City Star that they might ease Berry back into the system.
“We’ll see,” Reid said. “He’s feeling quite a bit better. He’s been making steady progress. We’ll see how this and next week go for him.
“If he feels comfortable and the docs are good with it and he is, we’ll start easing him in.”

As of now, the Chiefs secondary is getting shredded so any help would be great. Kansas City currently sits in dead last in pass defense, allowing an average of 7.5 yards per pass attempt. We saw those struggles firsthand in the Monday night game, as Jared Goff and the Rams did just about whatever they wanted to against the KC secondary.
Having Eric Berry would be big for a number of reasons. Obviously it offers an upgrade over Eric Murray, Ron Parker, Daniel Sorensen, but this is a young defense that could use a true veteran out there fighting the good fight.
Chiefs fans also want to see Berry play because he’s a fan favorite! Chiefs Kingdom loves Eric Berry and what he has brought to this organization and for him to have played just three quarters since signing that massive contract a year and a half ago is gut wrenching.
The Kansas City Chiefs need Eric Berry back, especially if they want to be playing past January this winter.
