Chiefs had some free agents in for visits before the New Year

The Chiefs may be getting a jump start on bringing in players with the intention of signing them to reserve future contracts. The Chiefs also have a free spot on the practice squad after Horace Richardson was signed to the Broncos active roster.

With the Chiefs still alive in the 2018 NFL Playoffs, they’re unable to sign players to reserve future deals. Other teams that aren’t in the playoffs already have a head start on signing potential hidden gems to contracts.

Howard Balzer of Balzer Football has the latest visits and tryouts with the Chiefs.

The Chiefs brought in former Bears defensive end Cavon Walker and former saints defensive tackle Henry Mondeaux for tryouts on Friday ahead of the new year.

Cavon Walker is a former Maryland Terrapin. In 2018 he joined the Bears as undrafted free agent. He didn’t make 53-man roster cutdowns with the Bears, but did play in two preseason games for the Bears. He recorded 1.5 sacks, 5 total tackles, and a single pass defended.

Henry Mondeaux was with the Saints during the preseason and shortly after trying out for the Chiefs he re-signed with the Saints on their practice squad. The Saints are still in the playoffs, so that’s a good opportunity for Mondeaux.

This visit is extremely intriguing to me. DeAndre Elliott joined the Seahawks as an UDFA out of Colorado State following the 2016 NFL Draft. He earned a spot on the 53-man roster and has been a solid contributor on special teams since. He lost his entire 2017 season due to a broken ankle that occurred in the preseason and when he wasn’t ready early during 2018 training camp the Seahawks waived him.

At 26 years old this players still has a ton of promise left if he’s recovered from his injury. At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds he has the size and length to play outside corner. At the NFL scouting combine he ran a 4.44 40-yard dash and had the second best vertical jump for a corner (41″) to only Jalen Ramsey.

Look for the Chiefs to add this player to a reserve future deal as soon as they are allowed to. He could perhaps join the practice squad even sooner if the Chiefs so choose to add him.
